1. Effluent Surfacing Over the Disposal Area

Wastewater pooling on the surface of your trenches or irrigation area is the clearest sign of failure. It means the soil below can no longer absorb what the system is sending it, so it takes the only path left and comes up. You may see it as shallow puddles, a greasy film, or ground that stays boggy long after the last rain. Treat any surfacing effluent as an urgent health hazard. Keep children and pets off the area and stop using water heavily until it’s been assessed.

2. Backups That Return After a Pump-Out

A single backup is a blockage. A backup that comes back a few weeks after the tank was emptied points to something structural: a collapsed pipe, a failed baffle, root intrusion, or a disposal field that can no longer take the load. Repeat backups also tend to get worse with rain, because saturated ground reduces whatever absorption capacity the system has left.

3. Odours That Never Fully Clear

A working system is essentially odourless from the outside. Sewage or sulphur smells that hang around the yard for weeks, rather than appearing briefly after heavy use, suggest gases are escaping through saturated soil or a damaged tank. Pay attention to where the smell sits. Odours concentrated near drains inside usually mean a venting or trap issue. Odours across the disposal area point to the system itself.

Silencing the alarm without diagnosing it allows partially treated effluent to continue discharging into your yard. If yours has gone off more than once in a service interval, get it inspected.

6. Cloudy, Grey or Foul Irrigation Discharge

For treatment systems that irrigate to the surface, the discharge should be clear and close to odourless. Grey, cloudy, or smelly water at the sprinkler heads means the treatment stage isn’t working, and untreated effluent is being sprayed across your yard.

Multiple fixtures draining slowly at once has always been a septic warning sign. If every drain in the house is sluggish permanently, rather than only on laundry day or after a long weekend with guests, the outlet or disposal field is likely restricted or blocked. Gurgling that continues after plunging, and starts in one fixture when you use another, tends to accompany it.

8. Contaminated Bore, Dam or Nearby Waterways

On acreage and rural blocks, failure often shows up in the water before it shows up in the yard. Cloudy bore water, algae blooms in a dam that used to run clear, or complaints from a downhill neighbour can all trace back to a system that’s no longer containing what it should. Most failures come down to one of five things:

Age: Conventional systems are generally built around a design life measured in decades, not forever. Concrete tanks crack, steel tanks corrode, and disposal trenches gradually clog with biomat.

Overloading: Adding bathrooms, a pool, or extra occupants pushes more water through a system designed for a smaller household.

Neglected pumping: Solids that aren’t removed on schedule carry over into the outlet and clog the disposal field, which is the expensive part to replace.

Root intrusion: Trees planted too close send roots toward the moisture and nutrients, subsequently cracking pipes and blocking lines.

Compaction and runoff: Vehicles parked over the trenches, or stormwater and roof runoff directed across the disposal area, destroy the soil’s ability to absorb.
